Japan - Partial Amendment of Specifications And Standards for Foods, Food additives, etc.
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) has published on 15 March 2024 (under MHLW Notification 82 of 2024) a partial amendment of Specifications and Standards for Foods, Food additives etc. (Act No. 370 of 1959) to revise the maximum residue limits (MRL) of Isofetamid, Ethopabate, Quizalofop-ethyl and Quizalofop P tefuryl, Chlorfluazuron, Tebufenpyrad, Hydrocortisone, Fluxametamide, 1-Methylcyclopropene, Mosapride and Cinnamaldehyde, based on Article 13, Paragraph 1 of the Food Sanitation Act (Act No. 233 of 1947).
Cinnamaldehyde has been removed from the list of contaminants and added to the list of Substances Specified By The Minister Of Health, Labour And Welfare As Substances That Are Clearly Not Harmful To Human Health Pursuant To The Provision Of Article 13(3) Of The Food Sanitation Act (MHLW Notification No. 83 of 2024) - Cinnamaldehyde. This means that the existing MRL of Cinnamaldehyde has been removed.
Main revisions:
1) Maximum Residue Limits (MRL)
Partial amendments have been made for the MRLs of Isofetamid, Ethopabate, Quizalofop-ethyl and Quizalofop P tefuryl, Chlorfluazuron, Tebufenpyrad, Hydrocortisone, Fluxametamide, 1-Methylcyclopropene, Mosapride and Cinnamaldehyde.
2) Cinnamaldehyde has been added to the list of Substances Specified By The Minister Of Health, Labour And Welfare As Substances That Are Clearly Not Harmful To Human Health Pursuant To The Provision Of Article 13(3) Of The Food Sanitation Act.
Applicable Date:
Amendments 1) shall apply from the date of publication. However, for the below food listed for each agricultural chemical etc., existing standards can still be used within one year from the announcement of this notification. Additionally, the revised MRLs for foods listed in the below table based on the partial amendment of standards for foods, additives, etc. (Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Notification No. 208 of 2020), shall apply from 31 May 2024.
