Japan - Partial Amendment of Specifications And Standards for Foods, Food additives, etc.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) has announced on 20 December 2023 (under MHLW Notification 335 of 2023) a partial amendment of Specifications and Standards for Foods, Food additives etc. (Act No. 370 of 1959) to revise the maximum residue limits (MRL) of Ormetoprim, Cyphenothrin, Dimethomorph, Fenamiphos, Fluxapyroxad and Prothioconazole; and remove the MRLs for Clostebol and Tribromsalan, based on Article 13, Paragraph 1 of the Food Sanitation Act (Act No. 233 of 1947).


Additionally, they have also amended the List of Substances Specified By The Minister Of Health, Labour And Welfare As Substances That Are Clearly Not Harmful To Human Health Pursuant To The Provision Of Article 13(3) Of The Food Sanitation Act (under MHLW Notification No. 336 of 2023) by adding Bismuth subnitrate to the list.



Main revisions:

1) Maximum Residue Limits (MRL)

  • Partial amendments have been made for the MRLs of Ormetoprim, Cyphenothrin, Dimethomorph, Fenamiphos, Fluxapyroxad and Prothioconazole; and

  • MRLs of Clostebol and Tribromsalan has been removed.

2) Bismuth subnitrate was added to the list of Substances That Are Clearly Not Harmful To Human Health.


Applicable Date:

Amendments 1) shall apply from the date of publication. However, for the below food listed for each agricultural chemical etc., existing standards can still be used within one year from the announcement of this notification.


Amendment 2) shall apply from date of publication.
