The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Korea (MFDS) has announced proposed revisions for the "Specifications and Standards" (hereafter referred to as the "Food Code") under notification no. 2018-376. This proposed amendment shall amend Food Code (2018-60 of Aug 16, 2018).
Main Revisions
The MDFS has newly established lead and cadmium standards for Dried Mekabu (undaria pinnatifida sporophyll) and has revised the maixmum residue limits (MRLs) for agricultural chemicals used in domestic and overseas markets to supply safe food to the public.
Main contents of Revision

Newly established standards for lead and cadmium in dried Mekabu under proposed Article 2.3.5(2) - 3
1) There is a need to manage dried Mekabu in order to reduce the exposure of heavy metals from ingestion.
2) The standards for lead and cadmium in seaweed shall be revised to include dried Mekabu
3) The safety management of food products containing dried Mekabu shall be reinforced.
The following MRLs of agricultural chemicals in agricultural products from (Proposed) Table 4 shall be revised:
(35) Methomyl, (68) Cyhalothrin and (116) Cartap, (349) Novaluron
1) There is a need to re-evaluate the current MRL in accordance with the current safety standards of use for agricultural chemicals.
2) The above mentioned 4 agricultural chemicals such as Methomyl will be revised.
3) The MRL of agricultural chemicals in agricultural products shall be reasonably revised to provide safe food products to the citizens of Korea.
