Korea | Propose Consolidated Revision of “Food Labelling Standards” (No. 2018-235)

Pursuant to the promulgation of the "Act on Labelling and Advertisement of Food, etc." (No. 15483, March 18, 2018), the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has proposed to provide a consistent standard by integrating the "Food Labelling Standards" and the "Livestock Product Labelling Standards" under notification no. 2018-235.

The "Livestock Product Labelling Standards" will be integrated into the "Food Labelling Standards” to reflect the characteristics of the two regulations and aid consumers and industrial players to have a clearer understanding of the regulations through rational revisions.
Major Revisions:
Addition of allergen-inducing substance labelling to raw ingredients food labelling.
Displaying of type and weight content of edible meat used in processed meat produced by manufacturers and processors who sales the product on the spot.
Displaying of information regarding defrosting of food which are defrosted before sales.
Addition of name and location of the defrosting company for bread, rice cakes, chocolates, and salted fish on label, establishment of display methods and warning notices regarding defrosting of vegetable juices and other marine products (limited to products that are sterilized or pasteurized and vacuum packed.)
Deletion of weight content when a common name is used as the product name for the livestock products and displaying of the relevant raw ingredient name and content.
Limitation of font size of foreign language in the case of mixed use of Korean and foreign languages in livestock products.
Add "pine nuts" to the labelling of allergen-inducing substances in livestock products.
Decreasing of caffeine tolerance range of high caffeine liquid livestock products to 90 ~ 110%.
Clarification of the display position and font size when displaying the name of the raw material on the main display panel.
Unification of display method and font size for the information panel of edible eggs, chicken and duck.
Displaying OEM on livestock products which are produced by OEM
Displaying the wordings, “Cooking example” when photos showing cooking pictures of the livestock products.
Displaying the fact that chemicals such as nitrogen gas has been charged on the livestock products if charging has been done.
Other revisions:
Amendment of the product type of processed livestock products to be displayed on the information panel
In the case of livestock products, the font size of the inner package can be smaller than 10 points.
If livestock product is composed of separate individual packages, individual labelling of each package can be omitted.
Relaxation of regulation to prohibit the display of foreign product name parallel to the Korean product name for imported livestock products.
Addition of labelling method of composite ingredients and composite food additives agents
Possible omission of display of food additives which become inactive enzymes or are removed from the final product.
