The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety MFDS has proposed partial revisions for regulations on “Sodium Content Comparison Standards And Method” in their Notification No. 2017-364 on 29 Sept, 2017.
Rationale For Revision:
In order to allow consumers to intuitively compare the sodium content in food using colors and shapes, the MFDS made it possible to use QR codes for a smoother display of the sodium content comparison. However, the QR code comparison method made it difficult for intuitive comparison and consequently defeating the original purpose of this regulation. Hence, the MFDS is proposing these new changes to improvement the current situation.
Main Changes:
Improvement of detailed method of sodium content comparison display
(1) The sodium content comparison mark shall be as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 in principle and the use of QR code shall be limited to packaging which has a surface area 50cm2 or less
